Is Gerswins Porgy & Bess een musical of een opera? Een musical! zullen velen roepen die alleen de losse nummers kennen, waarvan Summertime natuurlijk de allerbekendste is, door vele, vele vertolkingen van de meest uiteenlopende artiesten. Een opera! zei Simon Rattle een aantal jaren geleden toen hij zijn alom geprezen opname voor EMI maakte, maar nog duidelijker spreekt Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Wanneer de tachtigjarige dirigent, die vooral bekend is van zijn Mozart- en barokopnames, een onverwacht uitstapje maakt, zoals eerder met de operette Die Fledermaus, dan is het altijd oppassen. Zo ook hier. Harnoncourt pleit vol overgave voor Gerswins meesterwerk als een volwaardige opera, en dat is hier te horen. Het is misschien even wennen aan de klassiek geschoolde stemmen van Jonathan Lemalu als Porgy, Isabelle Kabatu als Bess en Michael Forest als Sporting Life, maar nog niet eerder klonk Porgy & Bess zo dramatisch, zo urgent, zo theatraal. Jazz, avant-garde en geweldige melodieën gaan hier hand in hand. Een aanrader, ook voor de jazz- en popliefhebbers.
