BELCEA QUARTET

Het Belcea Quartet heeft een enorme staat van dienst en een discografie die meerdere malen in de prijzen is gevallen. Voor ZigZag neemt het kwartet de heilige graal op: de complete strijkkwartetten van Beethoven. De heilige graal omdat Beethoven niet alleen misschien nog wel meer dan in zijn symfonieën of pianosonates hier zichzelf overtrof, maar bovendien zijn voorgangers eerde én een radicaal nieuwe weg in wist te slaan waarop latere componisten voortborduurden. Op dit tweede deel speelt het Belcea Quartet wederom zowel vroege als late kwartetten en vanaf de eerste noten van het derde kwartet tot de laatste van het zestiende is duidelijk hoorbaar dat hier op het scherpst van de snede gemusiceerd wordt. Hier klinkt Beethoven zoals hij altijd zou moeten klinken: avontuurlijk, messcherp en nooit op veilig gespeeld.

Belcea Quartet

After the first volume released in October 2012, this second volume completes the cycle of Beethoven Quartets given simultaneously by the Belcea Quartet in concert and on disc. Recorded live, like its predecessor, in the superb concert hall conceived by Britten at Aldeburgh, this volume couples quartets from different periods, including the last two (opp.132 and 135) and the Grosse Fuge (op.133).
