De Red Hot Organization is een charitatieve instelling die de bestrijding van HIV en AIDS ten doel heeft. Als experiment lieten ze in 1990 een benenefiet-album maken met liedjes van Cole Porter, Red Hot + Blue. Dat werd zo’n succes dat er meer volgden en Day Of The Dead is alweer het twintigste deel in de reeks. Uitgangspunt is ditmaal The Grateful Dead, een band die hier nooit zoveel heeft gedaan, maar in Amerika uitgroeide tot een instituut. Van veel hun liedjes zijn daar onderdeel van het cultureel erfgoed en dus ook bekend bij de jongste generatie van bandjes. Aaron en Bryce Dessner van The National namen de taak op zich een compilatie van covers samen te stellen. Het animo was zo groot dat er uiteindelijk maar liefst 59 liedjes werden geselecteerd voor deze schitterende jubileum-editie, die wordt uitgebracht op 5 CD’s en als limited edition vinyl-boxset.
