FREEDOM SOUNDS (LTD. EDITION)

Jamaica is vijftig jaar onafhankelijk en dat wordt natuurlijk uitgebreid gevierd. Muzikaal staat het eiland sinds die onafhankelijkheid meer dan ooit op de kaart, want de invloed die achtereenvolgens ska, rocksteady en reggae op de popmuziek heeft in onmetelijk. Het beste voorbeeld hiervan vind je op de 5CD box Freedom Sounds. Het roemruchte Trojan label brengt die muzikale geschiedenis in beeld aan de hand van vijf thema’s. In eerste instantie is het jammer dat er geen chronologie in zit, maar zodra je de schijfjes draait, snap je dat dit overbodig is. Er is gekozen voor een soepele tracklisting die zowel bekend als zeer obscuur samenbrengt en zo alle reggaehoogtepunten laat horen. Het merendeel van het materiaal is zelfs nog nooit buiten Jamaica uitgebracht en dat maakt deze box ook voor de doorgewinterde reggaeverzamelaar verplichte kost. Disc 1 is Freedom Sounds en laat de strijdbaarheid horen, disc 2 bevat Jamaicaanse hits, disc 3 laat de pioniers in het genre horen, disc 4 de vernieuwers en de vijfde disc is tenslotte gevuld met vergeten meesterwerkjes. Een fraai boekwerk, twee ansichtkaarten en een Trojan sticker complementeren de box.
